How to sell on WhatsApp in Kenya: a simple setup that works

A MacBook Air open on a stone surface in soft daylight

Most small businesses in Kenya already sell on WhatsApp, often without calling it a sales channel. A customer messages, you send a photo, you agree a price, and they pay on M-Pesa. The tools are free. What separates a busy seller from a quiet one is usually how organized that conversation is.

Here is a setup you can finish in an afternoon.

1. Use a business profile

The free WhatsApp Business app lets you add your business name, location, hours and a catalogue. People trust a profile that says who you are and where you are, and it answers the first questions before they ask.

2. Write down what you sell, with prices

Keep one simple list: product, price, what makes it different. When someone asks “how much?”, you should be able to answer in seconds. A price hidden behind “inbox me” loses people who are comparing three sellers at once.

3. Take better photos

You do not need a camera. Use daylight, a plain background and the real item. Show the whole thing, then any detail a buyer would worry about, such as a scratch on a laptop or the mileage on a car. An honest photo saves a wasted trip.

4. Reply fast, with a next step

A good reply names the product, gives the price and suggests what happens next. Compare these:

  • “Available.”
  • “Yes, the MacBook Air M2 is KES 95,000 in Westlands. I can send photos now and deliver tomorrow. Shall I hold one for you?”

The second one moves the sale forward without any pressure.

5. Go where people are already asking

Every day people post “who sells this?” on Facebook groups, TikTok comments and X. The hard part is seeing those posts while they are still fresh. You can search by hand, or use a tool such as Overten Scout, which looks for you and alerts you on WhatsApp with a reply ready to send.

Either way, you stay in charge of what you say. Reply as yourself, be useful, and stop if someone is not interested.
